Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay began to develop her artistic and creative side when she was a young girl, thanks to Aunt Denise. Aunt Denise worked as an overnight nursing assistant in order to give her an opportunity to study theatre or literature. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt recommended it to DuVernay. DuVernay recognized that art is an effective way to spread activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was socially conscious and taught the importance of speaking up through the arts. Although DuVernay was raised living in Compton with her parents, she was a summer resident at Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. DuVernay's dad recalled the civil rights marches on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. DuVernay's summers spent in Selma, Alabama would be the inspiration for her later the film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she earned qualifications in English and African American Studies. DuVernay started broadcasting journalism at the age of a young student. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to observe the house of one of the members of the jury as well as look through their trash. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalistic duties and decided to switch over to the public relations industry. DuVernay found a job immediately from college, working as a young publicist for a studio. The year 1999 was the time she established her own business that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency.
